Hilltop Educator Institute Presents:
From Survive to Thrive: A Guide for Leading an Early Childhood Program

Location: Hilltop Children's Center
Target Audience: Directors, program leaders, admin teams, lead teachers, mentor teachers, coaches, consultants, board of directors, and educators from ECE and Elementary Schools who wish to eventually step into any of those roles.
Overview:
Directors, coaches, program supervisors, and lead teachers, to name a few, have a diverse set of responsibilities, and managing them all can often feel like a delicate balancing act. You have to provide a safe, healthy environment for children and teachers. Hire and retain a qualified, diverse staff. Have a solid business plan. Understand child development and best practices in early childhood education. Establish collaborative relationships with families and program stakeholders. Market your program. Help out in a classroom when youre needed. Take time to care for your own physical and emotional health. Remain calm under pressure.
Your overall responsibility is to create a physically and emotionally safe, educational environment where learning and care can flourish for children, staff, and families. To do this, you must prioritize your duties and tasks on an ongoing basis and focus on what is most important at any particular moment, even as you keep an eye on the long term.
In addition to your skills and emotional makeup, your personal values and beliefs influence your day-to-day leading of the program as well as your organizations overall purpose and goals.
This workshop which is grounded in current research and based on the experiences of the authors as well as directors from across the country, blends theory with practical tips you can implement immediately. During the day, participants will be provided with the building blocks they need to:
1. Develop effective policies and procedures
2. Manage a healthy budget
3. Build a strong staff
4. Forge robust homeschool partnerships
5. Handle confrontation and conflict
6. Achieve and maintain full enrollment
By the end of the day, participants will have the guidance and strategies to go from surviving in their roles as leaders and directors to thriving in it.
About the Presenter
Debbie LeeKeenan MEd, is an early childhood consultant and lecturer (www.antibiasleadersece.com) in Seattle, Washington. Debbie has been an educator for over 45 years and worked with Carolyn Edwards at the University of Massachusetts Lab School from 19861993. She was also a long-time director/lecturer at the Eliot-Pearson Childrens School at Tufts University. debbie.leekeenan@gmail.com
Iris Chin Ponte, PhD, is director and classroom teacher at the Henry Frost Childrens Program (Montessori) in Belmont, MA. She also currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Lesley Universitys Graduate School of Education. Iris previously worked for Sesame Street Research at the Childrens Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) in New York among many other media and research institutions.
Sarah Felstiner, MA, is the Education Director at Hilltop Children's Center in Seattle, WA. Sarah and Hilltop has been featured in many different guides and videos including best sellers, Setting Sail: An Emergent Curriculum Project and Thinking Big: Extending Emergent Curriculum Projects. Routinely found presenting at NAEYC Annual Conference, consulting with program across Canada, or contributing to books and resources, she brings her expertise of Reflective Practice and Emergent Curriculum to various programs, helping educators uncover new possibilities and ways they can create environments that reflect and support their vision of children as capable, powerful designers of their own learning.
This event is FREE for for all eligible City of Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) early learning partners in the Seattle Preschool Program (SPP), the SPP Pathway Program, the Step Ahead Program, and ECEAP and City of Seattle DEEL Early Learning Staff.
