Hilltop Observation Visit - Wednesday, Dec 4th, 2019

The school year is in full swing, maybe your classrooms have that "lived in" look, and your children and families have built wonderful connections with each other. As you reflect on this school year, you might be wondering what else you can do to support and extend children's learning.

How do educators observe and reflect on children's work in a way that will inform their curriculum planning and assessment? How do educators spark children's thinking and respond to their ideas while balancing the practical needs of managing the classroom? How can children's interest be sustained in on-going project work lasting days, weeks, or even months? This "reflective practice" thing sounds great, but how do we sustain it in the midst of the busyness of life in the classroom?

At Hilltop, we've found that it can be done! And we would love to open up our doors to display the importance of observation, documentation through notes and pictures, and the learning that occurs in a real-life situation.

Join us for a 2 hour visit to Hilltop for an Observation Visit where you'll spend the morning witnessing how educators in our classroom reflect on their work while they listen to the children and observe them in order to make authentic assessments and to document their work to make the learning visible.

At Hilltop, we believe children are not empty vessels to be filled. In fact, they have something to teach to us.  Our job is to provide them with environments that provoke thought, learning and risk-taking.

Hilltop Observation Visit include:
  • An opportunity to observe reflective practice in action with Hilltop's children, teachers, and classrooms

  • Time to explore practical strategies for how to observe, reflect on, and build curriculum from the interests and needs of children

  • An opportunity to study Hilltop's Pedagogical Documentation, an approach to recording and tracking children's growth that enables teachers to both reflect on and develop curriculum directly from children's play

  • Hilltop Observation Visits run from 9:30-11:30. Please arrive by 9:15am.
Can't make one of our scheduled Observation Visit? Contact us to schedule one! Or consider joining us for one of our Study Day events. Groups of 6-15 educators and/or administrators can request additional dates to coincide with their own professional development or in-service days. Multi-day events can also be scheduled for teams interested in taking an even deeper look at how to implement this work in their own setting, or for guests traveling from farther away.

Contact us today to learn more about scheduling an Observation Visit or Study Day for you or your team.
