So Sexy So Soon: Media Culture and the Over-sexualized Childhood

Overview:

Educators need to understand how screen time and media culture are affecting children and families and to find effective ways to promote childrens healthy development in todays media-saturated environment.

As one of the worlds premier experts on children and the media, Diane Levin understands how todays media culture is impacting children. The morning part of the workshop will help participants analyze how all types of mediaTV programs, videos, video games, websites, music, advertisements, appsare affecting childrens lives, including what and how they learn from these experiences, and offers realistic suggestions to teachers and parents for what to do about it.

In the afternoon, Diane will offer advice on how attendees can limit children's exposure to commercialized sex, and give practical advice on how they can engage children in constructive, age-appropriate conversation about sex and the media.

This workshop is a combination of Diane's two books: Remote-Controlled Childhood and So Sexy So Soon and will feature recommendations and suggestions for how teachers and parents can best protect and promote the well-being of all our young children.

Please note: Levin stress that there is nothing wrong with a young person's natural sexual awakening, but it is wrong to allow a young person's sexuality to be hijacked by corporations who want them as customers. Levin offer advice on how parents can limit children's exposure to commercialized sex, and how parents can engage kids in constructive, age-appropriate conversation about sex and the media.

About the Presenter

Professor Diane Levins work focuses on how various factors in society, such as violence and war, poverty, media and commercialization, and educational mandates and testing affect childrens development, learning, behavior and play. She also recommends what we can do to protect children and promote optimal development and learning in relation to each of the societal factors she studies. Dr. Levin has authored (or co-authored) dozens of articles and eight books, including: The War Play Dilemma, Beyond Remote-Controlled Childhood, So Sexy So Soon, and Teaching Young Children in Violent Times.

She is the co-founder of Defending the Early Years (www.deyproject.org), which advocates for developmentally appropriate education in a time of ill-conceived standards and mandates, and Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Childrens Entertainment (www.TRUCEteachers.org), which prepares materials to help parents promote appropriate media and quality play in these times.

She has spoken widely about her work in the U.S. and around the world, and for 15 years has taken her students to Northern Ireland on a service learning program to study how early childhood programs can help communities that have experienced war and conflict heal.
