Hilltop Educator Institute Presents:
Creating LGBTQ+ & Gender Inclusive Schools: A Human Rights Campaign
Saturday, April 13th, 2019
Facilitated by Heather Kawamoto

Location: 2100 Building - 2100 24th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144

Overview:

Issues about gender in our schools are emerging as never before. As government, communities, schools and classrooms work to support the learning of every child, gender diversity (even in Seattle) is an area that is new for many educators.  As loving adults, we play an important role in turning around potentially negative situations for LGBTQ+ and non-binary children by helping to foster a school climate that promotes acceptance of diversity and security for all.

This workshop will look at policy, practice, teaching strategies and curriculum that will help you create a welcoming environment for students of all gender identities.  The morning session will focus on developing a framework for creating a gender inclusive school, which includes:

- How to respond to challenging questions related to gender.
- How to support gender expansive and transgender students

The afternoon session will focus specifically on creating LGBTQ inclusive schools, and will includes:

- Looking at simple ways to develop LGBTQ+ inclusive classrooms
- Discovering ways to develop a LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum
- Being able to better answer questions from students and families related to LGBTQ+ topics
- Becoming familiar with sexual orientation and gender identity terminology

By the end of this workshop, participants will be empowered to create school settings where every child's gender is seen, understood, and honored.
