Hilltop's Educator Discussion Series Presents:
Play, Culture, and the Role of the Teacher
Wednesday, November 9th
Facilitated by Margie Carter and Nnenna Odim

We are in an era of increased emphasis on school readiness and decreased opportunities for a child's unstructured exploration. What is the role of the teacher in early childhood programs to support children's learning through play experiences? Join Margie Carter and Nnenna Odim for a provocative evening to consider opportunities to provide for and respond to children's complex play.

We will explore the assumptions, dispositions, and experiences that influence our understandings and offerings of meaningful opportunities for children's play. And you will leave with practice in describing the nuances of children's learning as they play, as well as gain a repertoire of adult prompts to guide deeper curiosity and intentional teaching.

Washington STARS hours available - please bring your MERIT I.D. number.

Part of the Hilltop Educator Institute event series. Check out our other events!

We are excited to partner with our friends over at Imag(e)ine and the Reggio Roundtable to offer a pre-event happy hour from 4:30-6:30 on Nov. 9th. Join us across the street at Thai Fusion before Margie and Nnenna's discussion to engage with other professionals interested in issues relevant to early childhood education.

About the presenters:
Nnenna Odim has had the opportunity to partner with young children and educators in different capacities; classroom teacher, friend, researcher, and most recently coach. Our work with children connects with her view of people because a learning community is like a family that experiences many emotions that ultimately guide behaviors. She believes exploring our emotions develops empathy which aides the undoing of inequity in early learning. Currently, Nnenna examines the early educational system and how differences of culture impact classroom practice and policy application.

Margie Carter has worked in ECE in a variety of capacities and is inching her way toward retirement. A long time teacher educator through coaching, writing, speaking, and consulting, her current passion is uncovering and highlighting play as an equity issue, supporting and learning from new leaders, especially teachers who have chosen to lead and inform our profession through their daily work with children. Margie wonders why the word "childhood" has slipped away from our discourse as we now speak of early learning.
