Duwamish Tribe--In January 2009, the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center was opened to promote and share the heritage of Chief Seattle's Duwamish Tribe--Seattle's First People and only native tribe. Duwamish tribal leadership continues unbroken since Chief Seattle. The Longhouse provides a home for the Duwamish people and visible place to declare, "We are still here." Like traditional potlatch houses, it is a gathering place to which the Duwamish can invite guests. Image: The Brawny Young Seattle by Bill Holms.
