Born in the Bronx and raised in Brooklyn, Ari Hest is a singer-songwriter with a deceptively simple approach to lyric and melody. What at first sounds like winsome nostalgia becomes much deeper when you listen with both ears. In the past fifteen years he has released eight albums, two of them on Columbia Records. Drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Paul Simon and Pearl Jam, Ari came of age in the late '90s. A few years ago, with his warm, dusky voice and folk-meets-soul sound, he came to the attention of Judy Collins, with whom he now tours regularly. His songs can be heard on hit TV shows and between segments on NPR. His latest album, Shouts and Whispers, was released in 2014. USA Today said the record "comforts and haunts," and AbsolutePunk called it "magnetic."
