The May Day Parade - Seattle
There's a parade coming!  So, get a seat on the curb and watch as award winning storyteller Wayne Harris takes us on a road less traveled (or maybe less marched) as he portrays his childhood self as he prepares to march in his first parade, a Baptist Preacher, 3 generations on a porch, a 4 man bass drum line, 12 rather large "letter" girls bumping and grinding down a a mid-town boulevard and the 100 member Pleasant Green Baptist Church Drum & Bugle Corps.

"The May Day Parade" is set in the early '60s, a time when the boldest forms of racism still cast their long shadows over St. Louis. This play speaks to a time when America was on the cusp of the civil rights movement and reveals an African American family and community, through love and perseverance, who finds a way and in fact thrives. But, more than anything "The May Day Parade" is a celebration of the universal power of family and faith. And it's quite possibly one of the funniest shows you'll see in years. Funny...touching and not to be missed!  So, grab yourself a snow cone, find a place on the curb and get comfortable cause there's a parade coming!

Originally produced at The Marsh Theatre, San Francisco in 2007
Directed by David Ford

Note: One Performance Only, Reception to meet the Artist following the performance.

About the Artist
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Wayne Harris is an award winning solo performer, writer, educator, curriculum innovator and musician. A gifted artist with wide ranging interests, he has accumulated an impressive body of work over the years that includes 5 full length solo plays, performances for schools, directing and designing for pageantry groups as well as various musical projects and winner of the 2012 San Francisco "Best of Fringe".

"The May Day Parade" is Harris' third play which saw a return to his autobiographical writing and included a textured story about his first love: drum and bugle corps, as well as his childhood battle with polio and a vibrant rendering of a St. Louis African-American institution, the May Day Parade.   In the Spring of 2011 and again in 2013, Wayne will have the honor of performing "The May Day Parade" at the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. It is a chance to bring his work home.
