A letter from my family detailing Rain's journey is below.

Friends and Loved Ones,

Early Monday morning, February 6th we received the news that the youngest member of our family, Rain, had been a victim of a heinous and unwarranted violent crime.

When she arrived at the hospital after being shot multiple times in the back, the doctors were certain that she wouldnt live past the first few hours, so they did their best to keep her comfortable  trying to stop the bleeding and repair as much as they could to minimize suffering. During her first emergency operation, they removed her spleen, one of her kidneys, her appendix, 20 feet of her small intestine and most of her colon. She died on the table for a full minute. Miraculously, everything that they repaired led to a tiny bit of improvement, so they kept going. During the first 8 hours, her blood had to be replaced 5 times. Once they were finally able to stop the bleeding, they got to work.

During the first week, she underwent 7 surgeries, most lasting upwards of 5 hours at a time. They removed some of her pancreas and did their best to piece back together her digestive system, but unfortunately they had to close off her rectum and colon completely. Once her only remaining kidney finally started to work, they discovered a hole in her ureter and inserted a stent. Her injuries were so extensive that each nurse and doctor she encountered that first morning has since reiterated to us how special she is  further confirming the miracle we were seeing right before our eyes. So far, shes had a total of 13 surgeries, and more to come.

Rain has loved to dance and entertain since she was a small child. My sisters and I used to put on shows for our parents and their friends. Weheld ourveryown Olympics in our living room and knew every word to every Disney movie ever created. We even used to argue about who got to sing the good parts. We quickly learned that our dance family shared these similar childhood memories and possessed a love for the art of movement. Rain grew up to be not only a beautiful dancer and choreographer, but a beautiful person. She loves sharing her talents with everyone shemeetsand never forgoes an opportunity to make someone smile or inspire them to be the best version of themselves they can be.

Rain is a fighter. I know everyone says that, but were literally watching her fight every single day. She was in the hospital for 94 days, and in rehab for 10. Shes home now, but her struggles are not over yet. Shes had setbacks, and shes had ups and downs. She still has an ileostomy bag and two drains, and she cant take anything by mouth other than juice or water  all of which we are hoping will be remedied with future surgeries in time. Its going to be a long road, but we are thankful she is alive.

We are staying strong for her, which is more difficult than we ever could have imagined. There is no manual on what to do in situations such as this, and we are doing the best we can every day.You never expect this to happen to you. Its everyones worst nightmare. We constantly read/hear about violent crimes or watch the news and the terror that affects our communities, but this time its happening to us. To all of us. I wouldnt wish what Rain has had to go through on anyone. I wouldnt wish what my family has had to go through on anyone. The road is long, but we are not walking alone. Were blessed to have a wonderful support system and we are completely overwhelmed by all of the love we have been shown and continue to be shown. Please keep us in your prayers. We continue to fight with Rain, and we hope you will too. Be kind to each other. Love is loud.

Love,

Katie Stippec & Family (Greg, Sue and Ann)
