Recording the Jazz Ensemble with Steve Genewick

RECORDING THE JAZZ ENSEMBLE will be of value to engineers and/or musicians who either have not had the opportunity to record an ensemble "live" or simply wish to pick up additional techniques from an experienced master. Attendees will learn techniques for using the sound of the room (or isolating from, when necessary), tracking room layout, microphone selection & placement, phase coherence, and proper gain structure, as well as the human side of the equation including understanding and delivering on the clients' needs and how to interact to elicit the best possible performance.

The two day itinerary is designed to emulate a typical "live" recording session. Day 1 will begin with introductions and, perhaps, a little theory, depending on the skill levels in attendance. We will then set up the live room for the tracking session, making all necessary connections both in the live room and in the control room. A line check will be run and phase will be checked throughout the system.

After lunch, the musicians will arrive and microphone placements will be fine tuned as we begin to get sounds. Any necessary cue mixes will be set and recording will begin.

Day 2 will be devoted to mixing, making sure that everyone gets their hands on the faders. Additionally, every participant will receive a copy of the final mix(es), as well as the raw tracks to work with at home.

Steve Genewick has over twenty five years of experience, both as a studio and live recording engineer, and has received three Grammy nominations for his work.Steve has worked primarily out of Capitol Studios as a staff engineer since 1994. For the last 15 years, Steve has had the great honor of collaborating with 23 time Grammy award winning engineer/producer Al Schmitt, working with artists such as Diana Krall, Chris Botti, Gladys Knight, Neil Young, George Benson, Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, and Paul McCartney.

When not at Capitol, Steve can be found working at any number of major recording studios in Los Angeles, or mixing at his home studio. Recent projects include Michael Buble's Nobody But Me and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra's L.A. Treasures Project.
