Introduction to Trees and Shrubs
Instructor: Dr. Norris Muth, Juniata College
Description: If you do not know the names of things, the knowledge of them is lost too Linnaeus. Interested in gaining knowledge about trees and shrubs? A good way to start is to figure out their names and how to tell one from another. This day-long hands-on workshop will provide an introduction to tree and shrub identification focusing on the process of identifying useful field characteristics and navigating taxonomic keys.
Agenda: 9:30 a.m. 10:00: Gather and introductions. 10:00 10:45: Anatomy and descriptive terms useful for woody shrubs In classroom with fresh and pressed specimens. 10:45 11:00: Break 11:00 12:00: Using botanical keys for tree and shrub identification In classroom and/or live specimens close to classroom. 12:00 p.m. 1:00: Lunch and travel to field site. Please bring a lunch. 1:00 3:00: Identification of woody plants in the field.
