FLAMENCO NIGHTS @ GALERIA WEST
A special music & dance performance comes to the popular FLAMENCO NIGHTS @ GALERIA WEST concert series, located at the Galeria West Art & Music Gallery at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ. On Friday, June 9, 2017 at 7:30pm come enjoy an exciting evening of flamenco puro with internationally acclaimed dancer and singer Omayra Amaya along with accomplished flamenco guitarist Roberto Castellon and pianist and percussionist Gonzalo Grau as they celebrate the best of this internationally popular genre.

Omayra Amaya's legacy is one of a deep and proud gypsy flamenco tradition. The daughter of flamenco dancers Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of the greatest Flamenco dancer who ever lived, Carmen Amaya.

Omayra first appeared on stage with her parent's company, often interrupting their performances. Her first choreographed role came at age twelve, when she performed as her father's partner. By the time Omayra was fifteen, she was touring and performing internationally with her parents and other dance companies.  Already a seasoned performer, Omayra sought to expand and enrich her art by studying other dance forms. She attended the Boston Conservatory where she received a BFA in Dance and Choreography. As a student, Omayra caught the attention of numerous choreographers and respected performers. She accepted invitations to perform with Ana Sokolow, Ann Marie Forsyth, and Jennifer Scanlon.

Omayra founded the Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company, Inc.  She quickly made a name for herself at her company's premiere in 1994. Audience members and critics alike raved about the program which mixed modern Spanish and World Beat music with traditional Flamenco dance forms. The critics were quick to compare Omayra's style and presentation to that of her great-aunt's. Her electrifying presence, lightening fast footwork and non-traditional attire mirrored Carmen's revolutionary style and attitude.

Omayra Amaya performs a duet with Steve Martin in the Hollywood film, The Pink Panther II, which premiered in January 2009.  In 2008, Omayra Amaya created La Sobremesa a show that transformed the traditional setting of flamenco. The show received various awards including a proclamation by The City of Miami declaring August 15 as The Omayra Amaya Day.

In April 2013 Omayra Amaya collaborated with The New York Philarmonic, performing Manuel De Falla and Flamenco at Lincoln Centers Avery Fisher Hall.  In May 2013 she featured a new series of Jueves Flamenco performances at The Players Theatre in New York City, over the summer season from May through July.  Most recently Omayra Amaya and Company graced the stage at the Shanghai Theater Center in December 2013, with critically acclaimed and sold out performances.

Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company is currently based in New York City. Omayra cherishes her legacy and continues to push the boundaries of flamenco by creating a unique repertoire.

Teatro Sí brings to audiences this monthly evening of passionate flamenco performance. Along with special guest artists each month, the experience reveals the pure emotional essence of this popular Iberian music and dance form. Together they celebrate the expressive flamenco as it takes on a new character and exposes the audience to the warmth of the human spirit as expressed through music and dance. The body movements and the facial expressions of the dancers join with the artistry of the musicians and singers to create a spectacle that is a treat for both the eye and the soul. Come experience an evening of Spanish gypsy culture with the cast of this captivating music and dance celebration!
