PA German Handwoven Tape Workshop Class at Landis Valley

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, most PA German homes had a tape loom for the weaving of long, narrow family tape. The father or husband might build the tape loom, with many family members helping to weave it. Everyone used tape for tying their clothing, such as garters for their stockings, strapping and many other needs. In this workshop, students enjoy a historical overview of handwoven tape, an extensive exploration of the traditional tape looms and the process of tape weaving. They learn to read a 'draft' and to 'dress' a loom. Students have fun weaving traditional patterns, along with some contemporary tape, as well. All materials will be supplied, including the use of a variety of tape looms. No experience necessary.

Class is part of Landis Valley's 2017 Summer Institute. Class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
