When We Rise: An Evening with Cleve Jones
Join PFLAG Nevada County in welcoming Cleve Jones to Nevada County. You may remember Emile Hirschs portrayal of Cleve in Gus Van Sants Academy-Award-winning film Milk, which depicts Cleves friendship and close work with pioneering gay politician Harvey Milk in San Francisco in the 1970s. What you may not know, however, are the extraordinary accomplishments of Cleves later work: co-founding the San Francisco AIDS Foundation during the terrifying early years of the epidemic; conceiving the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the largest community art project in history; and his recent, integral activism on behalf of hospitalities workers with UNITE HERE!, as well as his work to overturn Californias Proposition 8 and legalize same-sex marriage.
Most recently, you might have seen both Austin P. McKenzies performance as a young Cleve as well as Guy Pearces performance as an older activist Cleve in ABCs When We Rise. The historic 4-part mini-series used Cleves new book, When We Rise: My Life in the Movement a a reference in writing its script. Cleves book will be for sale at the event.
Cleve will speak, and allow some time for audience Q&A, starting at 7:30pm.
Supporters also have the option of purchasing tickets to the 5:30pm benefactor reception which will include plentiful hors doeuvres, wine and non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets to the reception include reserved seating for the talk.
