Ar Livre Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that originated through slave rebellions. It is in some ways a fight, in some ways a dance, and in some ways a conversation. If you are looking to learn the basics of capoeira and/or push your physical boundaries in a new way, this is the class for you! The class will be run by the 3-year student of Novato Espaguete, who trained for 12 years under various Brazilian mestres as well as Mestre Jelon. Once students have reached a level of control and confidence in movement, they will have the opportunity to help teach parts of the class.
Our goal through these classes is to foster an appreciation for the art and culture of capoeira while building confidence and control in our students. Students can expect to learn/gain:
-The fundamental movements of capoeira
-Where their physical boundaries are
-How to safely push their boundaries
-How to protect themselves and others while training
-Muscular strength and flexibility
Students are expected to show up with excitement, eagerness to participate, and plenty of water. Due to the nature of capoeira, students will not be grouped by age, size or skill. Students should also bring:
-Plenty of water (some locations have water fountains, others don't. Bring more than you think you'll need)
-Mobile, breathable, lightweight clothing (keep it clean)
While being barefoot is encouraged, it is not required as long as the shoes are flexible and durable
-Readiness to participate
-Energy (get a good night's sleep before and after training, as well as plenty of hydration and healthy food. I know it sucks to eat healthily, but trust me, your body will thank you when you can actually get out of bed the next day)
-Humility (I've been doing this for 3 years. You've been doing it for 1 day. Accept that you won't do every movement perfectly and work to improve your form)
-Transportation. I highly encourage carpooling
The basic details of the class:
-Where: Various locations which will be announced at least 24 hours before class. The locations include Discovery Park, Gasworks Park, and Freeway Park. The final location for each class will be announced 24 hours prior to the start time.
-When: Saturdays and Sundays from April 22 through June 17. First class runs from 9 am to 12 pm. Second class runs from 2 pm to 5 pm. Each class will also have up to one hour after the official end time for students to play together in a roda
Who: Anyone and everyone over the age of 13, regardless of skill level or movement history
Cost: $15 per student. Students will be given a 7-day notice before any price change. Discounts are available. Please send relevant information that would qualify a discount to the provided email.
The final class will be a free, open celebration day where any student who took at least one class is invited to participate in a day of rodas and socializing.
Refunds are not available after the class has started.
IMPORTANT!!!
While it may look like choreographed in practice, capoeira is very much a reactive martial art. As such, there are inherent dangers. Before attending class, students must send me an email with the following agreement:
-Explicit understanding that capoeira, being a martial art, has the potential to cause personal injuries, and that, as the instructor, I hold no liability for injuries incurred during the class. It is the student's responsibility to keep themselves and their classmates safe. Students who do not hold a teaching role will be held accountable for any avoidable injuries they incur on other students. Injuries incurred between students will be settled between the students involved. If a student repeatedly creates an environment that an instructor deems to be too dangerous for the people around them, they may be asked to leave the class temporarily or permanently without refund.
-The last line of the email must be as follows: "I, [student name], understand that the above clause stating my understanding of the inherent risks of capoeira are, for all intents and purposes, legally binding. By sending this email, I, [student name], accept responsibility for my own safety and the safety of the other students and agree to not take legal action against any instructor or property owner in case of unavoidable or avoidable injury.
If the student is under the age of 18, please have a parent/guardian send the above email.
