Experimentation is the life blood of art. New modes of artistic expression challenge our assumptions and offer a renewed understanding of our increasingly complex world. No time period or place reflects these pursuits better than Renaissance Italy. From the 1300s through the 1600s, composers like Francesco Landini, Gesualdo, and Monteverdi pushed the boundaries of musical expression, balancing risk with artistry. This creative spirit continues in Italy today through 20th c. avant-garde composers like Giacinto Scelsi and Salvatore Sciarrino.
