Build a Better Board with Scott Heyman
Take your Board beyond the basics!
Training for Boards of Directors tends to be mostly about What Is the Boards Role? There are good reasons for this Boards very frequently micro-manage the staff. Just as often they abdicate their responsibilities and let the chief executive run the show.
But the presenter of this workshop believes that Tompkins Boards mostly understand this. They know their job is to build a strong roster of members, give clear direction to the chief executive, hold that person accountable, and help out as fundraisers and ambassadors. But they struggle with execution with making these things happen.
This workshop is a practical guide to Board success. Very little time is spent on theory or psychology. Attendees will leave knowing exactly the steps they need to take to build a solid foundation for Board success.
Are you frustrated that your Board doesnt step up and help to raise money? They would if you knew what to say to them.
Do your meetings drift from one verbal report to another? They dont have to.
Do you want to know what you must do to recruit and keep Board leaders who embody our communitys diversity? Competition for those leaders is intense.
Has it been a long time since you provided your chief executive with a meaningful performance review? How can you know how to do that? Or find the time?
Experienced, new, and yet-to-be Board chairs and chief executives will hear about and discuss the eight steps that any Board can, and must, take to become effective and engaged. If you have never heard the words This is the best Board I ever served on - you could!
The session will not enable your Board to know the right action to take, the right chief executive to hire, or the risks to take or avoid. But it will give you the organizational base you must have to improve your likelihood of making sound decisions - and of making your members feel their dedicated service is being well used.
Scott Heyman coordinated the Coalitions Workshop Series from 2008 to 2016 and he has provided on-site consultations for HSC to nearly half of the staffed non-profit agencies in Tompkins County. He co-founded the Non-profit Finance Officers Association of Tompkins County (FINZ), the Non-profit Chief Executives Association of Tompkins County (EXEX), and an informal association of Tompkins Board Chairs. During his HSC tenure, Scott served as interim chief executive of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service, Lifelong, and Challenge Industries, and he played a similar role for the T. Colin Campbell Foundation.
Previously he spent 10 years as the President/CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, 13 years as the Tompkins County Administrator, and five years as the Director of Human Rights for Tompkins County. In all of these positions, he led the development of learning opportunities for staff and board members.
He lives in the Triangle area of North Carolina with his wife Linda, four of their five grown children and six of their seven grandchildren. He consults for non-profit agencies in that area as a volunteer for the Executive Service Corps of the Triangle.
