Employment Law with Emily Rockett
This session with Emily Rockett, an attorney with an active employment practice with Ithaca law firm Miller Mayer, will include an overview of the latest in employment law. It will also include an open Q&A - a cost-effective opportunity to get answers to your most pressing employment law-related questions.
Many non-profits mistakenly believe that their small size exempts them from certain legal requirements, or renders them so small that no one will notice what we do. This belief is not only incorrect, it results in unfair and unlawful treatment of employees.
The workshop will give attendees an opportunity to explore what state, federal, and local labor and employment laws apply to their particular workplace. Are there special rules for non-profits? What are the obligations those laws impose? What are some appropriate compliance strategies?
Attorney Rockett will touch upon some hot topics such as employee handbook issues, time and attendance challenges, the distinction between employees and independent contractors, and how to manage challenging issues such as policies regarding employee use of the Internet, email, and social media.
An update will be provided on the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) revised white collar overtime regulations, which were recently stayed by a federal court injunction which preserves the status quo and prevents the revised regulations from becoming effective until a federal court determines the DOLs authority to make the final rule as well as the rules validity.
