DE INGA Y MANDINGA: African Diaspora Artistic Routes to Latin America

DE INGA Y MANDINGA is a bilingual (English-Spanish) multidisciplinary piece that explores artistic products of cultural mixing born of historical African diasporic influences in Latin America. "Inga" is a Castilianization of "Inca," a reference to Peruvian indigenous peoples. "Mandinga" refers to the enslaved West African peoples brought to the Americas. "De inga y mandinga" is a popular phrase (since 1800's) used to explain that we Latinos have mixed heritage as a result of the encounter of Indigenous, African and European cultures.

The DE INGA Y MANDINGA show tells this history incorporating poetry and video projections to provide a holistic experience and help the audience follow the stories told through song, music and dance.

This year's edition will explore connections among music and dance traditions from Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Argentina. The value of this production lies mainly in that this show is increasingly becoming a tradition in Seattle. As expressed by many, DE INGA Y MANDINGA sustains an alternative holiday event that highlights the cultural contributions of people of color in our community. With DE INGA Y MANDINGA Seattle is in the forefront of bringing representatives of these minorities together to preserve, cultivate and share their valuable heritage.
