Kingdom Denied - Between the Lines

Kingdom Denied is musical theater created by Kumu Mark Keali`i Ho`omalu and performed by the Academy of Hawaiian Arts.

Between the Lines premiered in Japan at Tokyo, Nigata, Nagoya, and Osaka during June/July 2012.

Between the Lines depicts life for the Hawaiian monarchy and its people starting with the death of King Lunalilo in 1874 through King David Kalakaua to Queen Lili`uokalani in 1893.

Since King Lunalilo had no designated heir, the constitutional monarchy required an election between Queen Emma and Chief David Kalakaua for ascendancy. King David Kalakaua is elected to the throne with subsequent rioting by Queen Emma's supporters. King Kalakaua restores Hawaiian culture after missionary repression and tours the world to root Hawai`i as an independent kingdom.

During his reign, King Kalakaua is forced to sign what becomes known as the Bayonet Constitution by an armed militia in 1887. The Bayonet Constitution starts a transfer of power from the Hawaiian monarchy to its legislature and cabinet, which is populated with US citizens.

After Kalakaua's death in San Francisco during 1891, Queen Lili`uokalani ascends the throne and attempts overturning the Bayonet Constitution. She is overthrown by conspirators that execute the ultimate annexation of Hawai`i by the United States.
