An Island Transformed
Travel back in time on a summer day for a comfortable, history packed excursion through this exceptional island community on San Francisco Bay.

An Island Transformed will trace the historic electric rail lines and Victorian architecture of Alameda with subject matter experts Grant Ute (co-author of "Alameda By Rail" with the late Bruce Singer), and Judith Lynch (Alameda Museum board member and City of Alameda Historical Advisory Board member). Grant will offer then-and-now descriptions of the neighborhoods. We will see vestiges of the picturesque stations that lined the routes, the commercial buildings that arose because of railway traffic, and the Southern Pacific suburban electric "red" car shops (now a winery). The stately Victorian homes and lesser cottages whose inhabitants rode those rails will also be featured.

Our organization last toured Alameda on April 4, 1954 when it took a steam-powered passenger train trip to Alameda with SP 2362 on the routes of the SP's Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley lines. While we can no longer offer steam engines or Harriman coaches, we will "make do" with a vintage Key System bus!

Don't miss this chance to visit this exceptional historic island community.

We will meet at 10 A.M. on Saturday August 4th in the parking lot of the Crown Memorial State Beach Park in Alameda.  The park is located at 900 Otis Dr. Alameda, CA 94501.  The cost to park at the State Beach is $5 to be paid to the East Bay Regional Park District when you arrive.  Please remember to bring a brown bag lunch, water, a jacket, and sunblock.

Hope to see you there!
